The Best Classic Board Games

I am a big fan of board games.  My kids need to be encouraged to play them (instead of the Wii) but when they do, they have fun - especially when we play as a family.  The best board games also have educational value and help kids build social skills.

Board games make excellent gifts, particularly when they come from grandparents or other relatives who might otherwise give clothes.

I like the classic versions of board games, not the trendy, licensed versions.  I have no interest in playing Harry Potter Clue or Littlest Pet Shop Monopoly.

I do love sitting down with my kids to play the classic board games on this list.  Next to each game, I have noted the skills it helps to develop:

  • Scrabble and Scrabble Junior are the best games for building language skills.
  • Yahtzee helps kids learn math facts (at least for numbers 1 to 6.)
  • Mastermind and Mastermind for Kids encourage logical thinking.
  • Sorry! is a fun, easy game that everyone can play - great for learning sportsmanship.
  • Othello teaches kids to think–and anticipate consequences–before they act.
  • Rummikub teaches strategy with numbers.
  • Perfection helps kids learn to process information and act quickly under pressure.
  • Clue and Clue Jr. promote logical thinking and deductive reasoning.
  • Battleship builds concentration and memory skills (which for me are not what they used to be.)
  • Boggle and Boggle Jr. help build phonics and language skills.
  • Monopoly and Monopoly Jr. provide early training for budding real estate titans.
  • Connect Four is fun for younger kids and encourages strategic thinking.
  • Pictionary and Pictionary Jr. are great for developing presentation skills and confidence.

Zhu Zhu Pets: Hot Toy for the Holidays?

It’s official.  My daughter has started her Christmas list and the toy at the top of the list - Zhu Zhu Pets!  She saw a commercial while watching TV and was instantly captivated by these furry little creatures.  There are five different Zhu Zhu Pets characters:

There are lots of Zhu Zhu Pets accessories too (of course) including a Zhu Zhu Pets Hamster funhouse, wheel and tunnel, spiral slide, adventure ball and more.  According to the manufacturer Cepia, LLC:

The best alternatives to real live hamsters, Zhu Zhu Pets hamsters don’t poop, die, or stink, but they are still a riot of motion and sound.  They dart around in their hamster tubes and busily scurry from room to room.  Simply pet the hamster’s back, set him down, and watch him Zhu Zhu-oom!

Savings Alert!  It pays to shop around for the best price.  Zhu Zhu Pets are available for sale at Walmart and Toys R Us and will be sold at Target in October.  Although you can buy Zhu Zhu Pets and accessories through Amazon, the prices on Amazon are currently higher than the prices at Walmart and Toys R Us.  (For example, Zhu Zhu Pets Hamsters sell for $7.99 each at Walmart, while some independent toy sellers are charging more than $20 each on Amazon.)

Zhu Zhu Pets may be the hot new toy this holiday season, so if you see any on the shelves, grab them!

Fatheads are Everywhere

Everyone loves Fatheads, those huge, lifelike action shots of sports stars that you can stick on your walls.  Even parents like them because you can stick them up and peel them off without damaging the wall.

Fatheads are a bit pricey (about $100 for a lifesized Tom Brady, for example) but they can completely transform a room, making it instantly cool.

Now there is a ‘mini’ version of Fatheads, called Fathead Tradeables.  These are 5″x7″ peel and stick images that are sold like trading cards, five to a pack.  At less than $15 per pack, these have become a hot gift among my kids and their sports-loving friends.  NFL Tradeables are available now and other sports are sure to follow.

Shop for Fathead NFL Tradeables at the KidCrunch Store.
