This morning I picked a bright orange hairband to pull back my daughter’s hair.  She asked why I picked orange.  I told her I thought it was a cool color.

My five year old corrected me.  “Orange is a warm color, Mom.”

She learned that from Blue’s Art Time Activities.  She used it a lot in preschool - and obviously learned from it - so I have to recommend it.

For animation fans, a few kids DVDs were released today.

• Tiny Toon Adventures: Season 1, Volume 2  30 episodes from the first season of Steven Spielberg’s cartoon series - one of the best animated shows of the 1990s.
• Stuart Little: The Animated Series - A Little Family Fun  Three episodes from the popular animated series based on the hit movie and book by E.B. White.
• Stuart Little: The Animated Series - Going for the Gold  Four more adventures from the Stuart Little animated series.

The 60th annual Christopher Awards were presented on April 16th as a salute to media that “affirm the highest values of the human spirit.”  The following books won this year’s Christopher Awards in the “Books for Young People” category.

• Sunrise Over Fallujah by Walter Dean Myers (Young Adult)  Story of 18 year old who enlists in the U.S. Army after September 11th and is stationed in Iraq.
• Shooting the Moon by Frances O’Roark Dowell (Ages 9-12)  12 year old girl learns about the horrors of war through rolls of film sent by her brother in Vietnam.
• Clementine’s Letter by Sara Pennypacker (Ages 9-12)  Third grader Clementine plots to keep her teacher from a sabbatical in Egypt.
• That Book Woman by Heather Henson (Picture Book)  Tale of a traveling librarian who brings books and a love of reading to Appalachia.
• Close to You: How Animals Bond by Kimiko Kajikawa (Preschool)  Charming, lyrical picture book that explores the bonds between animal parents and children.

• Bedtime Stories  Entertaining family film starring Adam Sandler.  We saw this in the theatre and the whole family really enjoyed it.
• Disney released a three-volume collection of its short animated films including Volume 1 Mickey and the Beanstalk, Volume 2 Three Little Pigs and Volume 3 The Prince & the Pauper.
• The Tale of Despereaux  The adventures of a brave and virtuous mouse, based on the Newbery Medal-winning book by Kate DiCamillo.
